Lesson 5.2 — Agents: AI that does jobs for you

AI for Dummies · Module 5: What else can AI do? · About 20 min · Phone or computer

Goal: understand what an AI agent is and watch one work safely.

What you'll learn

Step 1 · What's an agent?

A chatbot talks. An agent does: it can search many websites, fill in forms, compare prices or book things, step by step, while you watch. It's like the difference between asking a friend for advice and asking them to run an errand.

Step 2 · Safe demo: research

Gemini's free Deep Research (or a similar research mode in other apps) is a gentle example. It plans, searches lots of sites, then writes you a report.

Research 3 free or cheap weekend activities for grandparents and young kids in Brisbane this month. Include addresses and links.

Watch it list the steps it's taking. Then click 2 of its links to check them.

Try it now

Run the demo above for your own town or interest.

Safety note

Stay safe: Never give an agent your passwords, bank or card details, or permission to pay while you're learning. Agents can make mistakes, and scammers make fake "AI agent" apps.
