Lesson 1.1 — AI in plain English
AI for Dummies · Module 1: What is this AI thing? · About 15 min · Phone or computer
Goal: understand what a chatbot actually is, in one sentence.
What you'll learn
- Say what a chatbot does in your own words
- Know it isn't a person and isn't Google
Step 1 · What it is
An AI chatbot has read a huge amount of text. When you type something, it predicts a helpful reply one word at a time, a bit like a super-powered autocomplete on your phone.
- It doesn't "know" things the way a person does
- It doesn't have feelings, even if it sounds friendly
- It can be very useful, and it can also be wrong
Step 2 · How it's different from Google
Google finds web pages written by people. A chatbot writes a brand new answer for you. That's handy, but it means there's no page you can check unless it shows you its sources.
Try it now
Finish this sentence on paper: "A chatbot is a computer program that…" Keep it to one line.
Safety note
Stay safe: Treat answers like advice from a clever stranger: often helpful, never automatically true.
